Hollywood is once again trying to make a feature film version of Frank Herbert’s classic novel, Dune. His son Brian is co-producing with Kevin Misher and Brian Anderson. The script is to be written by Frank Zetumer and directing chores will be handled by Peter Berg. Though I’m sure the special effects will be awesome, I have doubts that the new film will have the depth of character or thought provoking issues of the SciFi Channel mini-series, but if this is the start of a film series that will see all of the books adapted, I’ll be happy.

One of the great comedians passed away Thursday, Harvey Korman. Probably best known as Tim Conway’s straight man on The Carol Burnett Show, he was famous for being unable to keep a straight face in his skits with Conway (but to be fair who could?). He also added great comedy to many films.
Some of his career highlights include the goofy villains Hedley Lamarr (”That’s Hedley not Heddy!”) and Dr. Montague in Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles and High Anxiety, as well as the loopy disguise expert Auguste Balls in several of Blake Edwards’ Pink Panther movies. He is a talent that will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.
Another sad day in Tinsel Town as famed director Sidney Pollack died Monday from cancer, our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. Pollack was a dedicated craftsman who’s body of work included They Shoot Horses Don’t They?, The Electric Horseman, Absence of Malice, Out of Africa, Tootsie, The Firm, and The Interpreter. He will be missed.
