Image Is Everything

It is amazing what constitutes news these days.  Apparently Jessica Simpson, who has managed to revive her career after some truly awful films and less than stellar recordings by turning to country music, has put on some weight.  My wife was surfing one of her news sites, either Digg or Fark, I can’t remember which, and they did a big story on it.  High lighting several shots of her at a recent performance and then comparing them to shots of her from the “who thought this was a good idea?” remake of the Dukes of Hazzard and pictures of here right before her divorce (where she looked on the verge of anorexia) they then made the obvious conclusion that she was fat, how sad.  My thoughts on this are why is this news?   Does it really matter that jessica Simpson isn’t the svelte hottie she was ten years ago?  Nobody complains about how heavy Aretha Franklin, Wynona Judd, Mariah Carey, or Nancy Wilson are.  Why?  Because they have the talent to overcome such trivialities, are comfortable with they way they look and don’t really care what other people think.  The shots I saw of Simpson, she looked happy.  So I say as long as there isn’t a health issue involved, and if she and her fans are okay with her new non-sculpted super model look, find something else to carp about, like how crappy the Oscars are going to be this year (why the continued snubb of Clint Eastwood for best actor?).  Personally I have nothing to say about her figure (standing 5′9″ and weighing in at around 300 lbs I can’t critize anyone weight) but after having see the skeletal picture of her from just before she and Nick split up, I’m just glad she’s eating again.  A ham sandwich is a good friend indeed.
