I guess the combination of doing novelty songs and appearing in the Smokey and the Bandit movies pigeon-holed him as an amiable good ol' boy. But you are right that he was a truly scary villain in Gator and I also thought he was quite effective as a criminal in The Survivors. It's a rare gift to be able to handle comedy and drama, and he appeared to do it effortlessly. There are plenty of big name actors who can't achieve that feat.
