Now that 21 is the Number One movie over the past weekend despite having every major film critic pan it, it brings to mind a recurring question.  Is there a need for film critics?  Does any one reading these articles and blogs use it as a deciding factor in whether or not to see a particular film?  Or is it like Jim Emerson says on his blog, that people read critics like Roger Ebert just because they like his writing?  My money’s on the latter reason.   It certainly would explain how his books I Hated, Hated, Hated This Movie and Your Movie Sucks became such big sellers.
