Award Shows Overkill Season

Now that the new year has started we the audience can be bombarded by enough movie award shows to choke a herd of horses. We have the Oscars, the Golden Globes, The Peoples Choice, The Critics Choice, The Screen Actors Guild, the Razzies, and the MTV Movie Awards. There are many more I’m missing, but these are the main ones. The question for me becomes do we really need all of these awards? How many statuettes does Denzel Washington or Tom Hanks need for one film? Are we so in need of justification and praise for what we do that we have to constantly be given an award just for doing our job? Are we so afraid of hurting someone’s feelings that we have to keep making more and more awards so that nobody feels left out, or unappreciated. For me you only need two awards, the Oscars and the Razzies, celebrate the best and the worst, and then leave it at that. If someone is disappointed they didn’t get nominated or, God forbid, didn’t win, then next year try harder. That’s what competition was supposed to teach us in school. Oh yeah, they’ve trying to get rid of stuff like class valedictorian in schools, causes students who don’t get the grades to feel inadequate. No wonder we feel the need for all the self congratulatory hoopla during awards season.
