I saw a news story the other day about how how SAG struck a deal with the Writer’s Guild to produce their awards show. That gave me pause. Seperate deals have been struck with Letterman’s people, and deals are being struck for some of the award shows that all come out this time of year. It seems to me that if the Guild keeps parceling out agreements for shows they’re just prolonging their own strike, with no reason for studios to really give in, they just have to wait and let an intermediary broker something for a major event, and nothing ever gets settled. Which means the writers have already lost. A strike is a like a war, one side has to give in, and the writer’s are doing that little by little because they can’t bring themselves to be totally ruthless. The screen actors are supports, so they give in for them for a one time concession, which allows the studios to hold off a little while longer and fresh programming is put on the air. I know that nobody wants to be the bad guy, but Hollywood is big business, and big business eats up the nice guys.

I didn’t watch the SAG Awards last night. I just really wasn’t in the mood to watch three hours of actors gushing about acting, if I really need to see someone meandering about the profession I’ll watch James Lipton. Plus I don’t want to get burned out on award shows before the Oscars. Which reminds me I have to do what everyone else is doing, make a blog of predictions. Now where did I put that list of nominees….
I have to hand it to Eddie Murphy, the only man in Hollywood to actually garner Razzie and Oscar nominations for the same film. Norbet garnered Murphy five Razzies in five different categories. He is nominated for Worst Actor, Worst Actress, Worst Supporting Actor, Worst Onscreen Couple, and Worst Screenplay (this has to be a record of some kind). When you take on multiple roles you increase your chances to really suck exponentially. But the real mind boggling thing is that Norbet got nominated for an Oscar for Best Makeup. That means there is actually a possibilty that someone could actually say,” And the Oscar goes to…Norbet!?!” Oh the humanity!
